Wild Horse Ranges Trip Date Changed – Sunday 1 April 2012 buses are now full
Each year Kaimanawa Heritage Horses arranges a guided bus trip through the Waiouru Army Base land.
This is the home territory of the wild bands of Kaimanawa horses.
See our breathtaking natural high country desert wilderness. Participants will see bands of wild horses. Bring your camera.
This area of New Zealand is usually off limits to the public and very few get to see it.
The bus leaves the Waiouru Army Museum carpark on the Sunday morning and returns late Sunday afternoon. Accommodation is available on the Saturday and Sunday nights. This includes a cooked breakfast and is a great way to meet the rest of the travelers.
There is one trip a year, usually in March, and numbers are limited.
If you are interested in attending the next trip, please complete the form below. Closer to the time of the trip you will be contacted for final bus and accommodation numbers and payment to confirm your place.
For the bus trip everybody will need to bring:
- Own packed lunch
- Own drinks
- Warm clothing in case of a cold day
Hi there, Very excited about our trip down this weekend and just wondered if you would let me know the meeting time and place for gathering? We are staying in Taupo overnight so will need to leave in plenty of time to be with you on the Sunday morning.
Thanks

Hi,
The bus leaves from the Museum carpark at 10am, so any time before then.
See you there.
Heya,
So do the tours only run once a year?
I have never heard of them before and just found out about them today from one of my mates that went over the weekend.
Thanks
Yes, the Army only lets in limited numbers once each year.
