Kaimanawa horses are a rare breed, exclusively roaming NZ’s Kaimanawa Ranges with no human contact. To keep their ecosystem alive only 400 horses can exist in the wild and there are currently too many to be sustainable.
Now is your opportunity for the incredible privilege of being a part of New Zealand’s heritage by helping one of these beautiful and intelligent horses.
For each kaimanawa horse that we save from the muster, a minimum of $2500 is needed to cover their initial costs of purchase and transport, their first lot of training sessions, a feet trim and a dental visit. This amount would cover their costs for the first three months of their domestic life.
Some mares can take longer to train then stallions and many are likely in foal which makes the mares a more long term commitment. For this reason, we need to ensure that each mare we save from the muster, that we have enough support in place to ensure their care is maintained long term.
Our sponsors receive regular updates about the horse they are sponsoring. Visiting your sponsored horse is also possible and if you’re lucky, you may receive naming rights.
The next muster will see around 200 horses removed that will need to find homes or sponsorship in order to be saved.
